We reached out to past recipient Christina Grasso. Christina applied for and was granted a $5,000 Bursary in 2011 to assist her in her studies at James Cook University whilst she completed her Bachelor of Nursing.
We asked her a few questions to help give future applicants about the Philip Leong Youth Programme. 1.What is your biggest achievement in business to date?
At this stage in my career, I have recently graduated from James Cook University (December 2014) and in February this year I commenced my 12 month graduate program as a Registered Nurse at the Townsville Hospital.
2.Tell us something about yourself that many people don’t know
I was the first person in my family to get a university degree, I had lots of support and encouragement in doing so.
3.What advice would you give to up and coming young business people
Sometimes it can take time to build up your experience to aspire to something big. For instance, I plan on finishing my graduate program and getting as much experience in nursing as I can get before moving on to something bigger.
4.How did the bursary assist you?
While I was at university, I was heavily involved with the community and music. I played the flute in several of the high school musicals while trying to manage my studies and a part time job. The bursary encouraged to me continue to be a part of the community with my music by alleviating some of the financial stress.
5.Phillip Leong assisted many young people in business, arts and sport. What contributions doyou (and your business) make/plan to make to our community?
At this stage, my focus is finishing the graduate program and getting as much experience in nursing as possible. I would love to do some community nursing and continue with my music in the community.
6.Do you have any reflections about the bursary process that could help current applicants? Be patient and no matter what happens, don’t give up on whatever it is you want to be doing.
7.What future aspirations do you have for your professional career and/or your business? It really is difficult to say yet as I am so new to the profession. I would love to get some experience in community nursing which might give me a few more ideas.
8.Which local schools or education establishments have you attended? I attended Pimlico State High School which had an excellent music program and prepared me very well.
I then attended James Cook University and have now graduated.
